Care and Control
Alcohol & Drugs
To safeguard the well being of residents and staff, no alcohol or drugs are permitted on the premises. There is a written policy on the use of alcohol and drugs, which all staff are made aware of during the induction period. Any breach of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action and may lead to dismissal.

Residents are made aware of the policy on admission to the home. Should a young person take drugs or consume alcohol outside of the home the appropriate action will be taken on his/her return. Under no circumstances will a young person knowingly be permitted to bring drugs or alcohol on to the premises. If it is known or suspected that a young person has drugs in his/her possession the police will be informed. If a young person is believed to be using drugs or consuming alcohol on a regular basis his/her referring agency will be advised and appropriate action sought.
All staff receive training on drugs and alcohol misuse. They have a good understanding of the effects of alcohol and different types of drugs. The training provides basic knowledge on making assessments, different approaches to deal with substance misuse and identifying effective approaches to future early intervention and preventative work.
Smoking
Southern Care recognises it has a responsibility to promote the health of young people in its care and as such are encouraged to take responsibility towards maintaining this.
All Southern Care homes are smoke free zones. There are designated smoking areas outside the buildings, which are separate for staff and young people.
Staff receive training on smoking and nicotine addiction and have a good knowledge on its effects. The training is based on a behaviour change model, which helps provide the skills to encourage young people to stop smoking and take responsibility for their own health.
