Care and Control
Challenging Behaviour
It is inevitable due to the nature of some of the young people in our care that from time to time staff will be subjected to challenging or disruptive behaviour. To reduce the risk of harm to the young person, other residents or staff some form of control may be required to defuse or remedy a situation.

Policy & Procedure
- Primarily the Southern Care staff team is trained to build positive relationships with the young people in its care in the belief that this will help reduce the potential for challenging or disruptive behaviour.
- Southern Care has a clearly defined set of boundaries which is explained to the young person on admission allowing him or her to take responsibility for the consequences of his or her actions
- Each home has a sanction book for misdemeanours that may occur
- All staff receive, training on permitted and prohibited forms of control are aware of and have access to the policies and procedures for any action which may be required
- Staff receive training on permissible forms of positive handling and the use of reasonable force should this be necessary to prevent risk.
- Incidents involving the use of positive handling are recorded in accordance with policy and procedure within the legal requirements
- Incidents, sanctions, control or restraints are fully recorded and reported to the placing authority and Commission for Social Care Inspection (if appropriate)
- There is always a Senior Officer on call at all times
