Southern Care has built positive links with the Local Education Authority (L.E.A) including schools, colleges and careers agencies. As a result of these positive relationships we are able to negotiate packages of education to suit the assessed needs of individual young people
In consultation with the Local Education Authority we aim to provide each young person with a broad and balanced education in accordance with the requirements of relevant legislation and, wherever practicable, in accordance with the national curriculum. Where a young person has a statement of special educational needs the alternative curriculum provision specified in the statement will be sought.
In consultation with the service purchaser Southern Care will provide broad and appropriate educational experiences both on-site and by accessing local educational facilities.
An individual educational plan will be drawn up by Southern Care in consultation with the young person, his or her parents/carers, the service purchasers and appropriate others. All education plans will be reviewed on a termly basis.
Annual review of the statement of special educational needs will need to be arranged by the education authority responsible for the statement and in consultation with the service purchaser, carers and appropriate others.
Southern Care’s ethos is to work with young people to increase self-confidence by identifying areas where individuals need extra support and by encouraging identified strengths. For young people who have been out of education for a long period we work to re-establish a culture of learning.
Southern Care has a homework policy and ensures all young people in our care have time, space, privacy and staff support to complete their homework tasks.
All young people in our care are expected to undertake appropriate learning whilst waiting to return to full-time education. Where appropriate, our staff support and encourage the young person to seek advice from the careers service accompanying the less confident young people to attend interviews etc.
All such plans are in consultation with the education authority, service purchaser and the young person’s carers. Written approval is required from the L.E.A. for work placements.
